According to a report by CNN, the 2025 Beauty and Personal Care Content Report reveals that high-risk chemicals, such as those found in shampoos, conditioners, foundations, and lipsticks, are still prevalent in products. Hidden dangers not listed on labels include PFAS chemicals detected in 52% of 231 cosmetic products sold in the US and Canada. These substances are known to disrupt hormone balance and are associated with health issues, including cancer. Furthermore, the report found that 88% of products do not list these chemicals on their labels.
Experts highlight that chemicals like formaldehyde in hair straighteners are particularly common in products targeting black women, emphasizing their link to cancer. The report lists the most concerning chemicals to watch out for, including Cyclopentasiloxane and Cyclomethicone (silicone derivatives), Methylparaben (hormone disruptor), BHT (endocrine disruptor and environmentally toxic), and D&C Red 27, 28 (colorants affecting the immune and reproductive systems).
Chemical safety expert Heather McKenney stresses, “Consumers should not have to figure out which products are safe. This responsibility lies with manufacturers,” calling for more transparency in the industry. The report by ChemFORWARD organization notes a 2% decrease in hazardous chemicals and an increase in safe formulations. However, approximately 4% of 50,000 products still contain high-risk ingredients.
Experts advocate for a transition to non-toxic formulations in the cosmetic industry, emphasizing that beauty should not come at the expense of our health. It is crucial for both consumers and manufacturers to prioritize safe and transparent practices in beauty and personal care products.
